The post-holiday slump hits hard. After the nonstop hustle of the holiday countdown, you’re likely feeling less-than-eager to tackle dinner. Perhaps you’re even planning to order a meal or two for delivery — lucky for your wallet, new research could save you a buck.

Grubhub is the cheapest delivery app in most of the United States, per a new report by NetCredit. If you’re based in a major city, however, you might want to try DoorDash or Uber Eats — it all depends on your location. The report, which analyzes prices for the top delivery services, aims to identify the cheapest app in every state.

Meals are often pricier on delivery apps than on brick-and-mortar menus. (You’re paying a premium for the convenience of delivery, after all.) Those inflated prices vary by platform and restaurant — and thanks to dynamic pricingeven time of day. From an app user’s standpoint, it’s not always easy to quickly discern the cheapest option.

Here’s the report’s methodology: NetCredit’s research team considered the delivery costs from seven popular chains — Subway, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, KFC, Popeyes, Burger King, and Taco Bell — in the 100 largest cities by population, plus the top five cities in each state. They analyzed the set prices of three popular menu items at each chain, filtering out restaurants that didn’t list prices for all three items. To record the price per location, researchers then summed the prices of all items for each chain.

Grubhub offers lower prices on most chains (but there’s a catch)

Chicago-based delivery platform Grubhub offers the lowest prices in 24 states, according to NetCredit’s findings. DoorDash and Uber Eats are each the cheapest option in 13 states, according to that analysis of fast-food prices.

While Grubhub appears to offer the lowest prices across the board, McDonald’s customers in larger cities might consider ordering through DoorDash instead.

In cities like Indianapolis, DoorDash ties with Grubhub for the lowest average order total. In Maine, you could save $2 on McDonald’s staples like Big Macs, french fries, and 10-Piece McNuggets by ordering through DoorDash. In Arkansas, you’d save a dollar by using Grubhub.

City dwellers can save money, too

While Grubhub savings dominate in much of the country, DoorDash offers savings in many metros. In Los Angeles and other West Coast cities like Seattle and San Francisco, you’ll save around 8% on DoorDash

Those findings aren’t consistent across every major city: In New York City, Grubhub remains 8.4% to 12.4% cheaper than its competitors. When ordering delivery in Austin or Phoenix, Uber Eats should be your app of choice.

Shopping around for the greatest deal

These days, discounts drive the fast-food game — and cost concerns are often consumers’ top priorities. Value meals, in-app coupons, and limited-run promotions all help to capture a greater share of the trillion-dollar market.

While loyalty programs may reward faithful customers for their consistent reorders, an uncertain economy could lead customers to simply chase the best deal. For the roughly 28% of Americans who use delivery apps weekly, NetCredit explains, those savings could quickly stack up.

“People can use the findings to make smarter choices when selecting which delivery app to use,” Matt Pelkey, content strategy manager for CashNetUSAtells Food & Wine. “This can encourage consumers to think carefully about comparing options instead of using the same app all the time.”

Food prices are rising across the board, but there are a few strategies to regain control of your budget. Beyond finding the cheapest delivery option in your city, shoppers might also consider ordering during the midday slowdown or splitting a group order with neighbors, according to NetCredit.

At the end of the day, it’s worth considering whether a food delivery is necessary or a luxury — maybe it’s time to give last night’s leftovers another look.
