The decorations have been stored away for another year, the string lights have come down and now there’s a Christmas tree-shaped hole in your living room. So breathe new life into your decor by taking inspiration from the much-coveted Cotswolds.

After all, it’s fast becoming the place to live, with Beyonce and husband Jay-Z (potentially) joining the Beckhams, Kate Moss, Ellen DeGeneres, Simon Cowell and a host of other country-loving A-listers in the area.
But you don’t need to have millions in the bank to achieve the look. Nor do you need an interior designer on speed dial because I’ve asked the experts how to create affordable Cotswolds chic in your own home…
Wipe out white
The No 1 rule? Banish white paint from your walls. ‘It makes rooms look characterless and lacks warmth,’ says interior designer Susie Watson of susiewatsondesigns.co.uk, who owns a popular Cotswolds boutique and is often credited with inventing ‘Chipping Norton Chic’.
Instead, look to the location for inspiration and opt for green, blue, warm grey or pick creamy tones that reflect natural Cotswold stone.

Panelling appeal
There’s a reason panelling has been used for hundreds of years in country homes. ‘It hides a multitude of sins, such as uneven walls or pipework, and creates a feeling of cosiness,’ says Cotswolds-based interior designer Helen Holmes of j-hdesigns.com. ‘Use it in the bathroom, kitchen, wrap it around a room or even cover wardrobes with it.’

Customise curtains
‘Choose curtains over hard, functional roller blinds whenever you can,’ says Susie. ‘Brilliant at keeping out draughts, we line ours with striped cottons and trim them with pompoms and tassels – so much prettier and softer.’
Linen fabrics and small-scale floral or geometric patterns are popular with the Chipping Norton set. Always go for long styles.

Fabulous frames
‘You can never have too many mirrors and paintings – they bring a room to life,’ says Susie. ‘You can’t go wrong with vintage-look paintings of French-style flowers,’ adds Helen. ‘Designers often visit brocante fairs (flea markets) in the Cotswolds, but you can pick them up cheaply at boot sales and charity shops.’

Roll out the rugs
‘Cottages have stone floors, and rugs add interest, softness, colour and cosiness to a room – we use them a lot,’ says Helen.
Turkish wool kilims, flatweave styles and natural textured jute rugs are classically Cotswolds, but you don’t have to spend a fortune: ‘Laredoute and Dunelm have a good selection, and we actually often use the Lohals jute rugs from Ikea.’ (£99, ikea.com).

Mix and match
Unlike some decor styles, the Cotswolds look is all about things not matching. Susie’s advice is to mix both new and old furniture – antiques, painted furniture and even Chinese lacquered pieces are popular – as well as pairing different patterns and prints, with the aim of creating an eclectic mix of things that look as if they’ve been collected over time.

Basket boost
The go-to for storing everything from logs, laundry, shoes, toys and even toilet rolls, baskets are found in every chic Cotswolds home.

Layered lighting
Modern spotlights have no place in country homes. ‘Create different moods and cosy corners by “layering” your lighting, using a mix of wall lights, pendants, table and floor lamps,’ says Helen.

‘Swap the boring plain white lampshades that come with High-Street lamps for pleated fabric versions – it’s a lovely way of adding colour and pattern, and looks far expensive.’
For good designer dupes, try pooky.com, Dunelm and John Lewis.

Beautifully dressed beddings
Duvets are a controversial subject. ‘They can be too hot in the summer and changing a duvet is an incredibly boring job,’ says Susie, ‘Instead use a combination of prettier sheets, quilts and throws.’
If you can’t bear to ditch the duvet, Helen suggests disguising it. ‘Get the inviting country hotel look by dressing it with cushions and layers of light throws in tactile wool or linen,’ she says. Dunelm, George.com and Ikea have a good selection.

Treat your table
Bare tables for supper are a no-no, says Susie: ‘Lay your table with a cloth and fabric napkins. It instantly makes the kitchen look special, while candles and flower bottles will complete the look.’
The trendiest Cotswold tablescapes feature linen tablecloths from Daylesford Organic in floral or paisley prints, but Helen suggests searching for inexpensive embroidered ones in antique shops or trying H&M Home or Zara for cheaper lookalikes.
