A woman who found an old supermarket receipt from 1997 has left the internet stunned over how much prices have increased since then.

Zoe Dippel, 24, recently came across the receipt while she was looking through some old momentos with her sister-in-law.

Shocked by how cheap food cost in the ’90s, she took a video of it and shared it to TikTokwhere it went viral.

The receipt – which was dated June 20, 1997 and was from the popular grocery chain H-E-B – contained a whopping 122 items ranging from fruits and vegetables to baby food and diapers, and the total was only $155.34.

In a follow-up video, Dippel explained that they had found the receipt in her sister-in-law’s baby photo albums.

‘Her mom is super sentimental,’ she explained. ‘She has lots of photo albums of all of her kids.

‘We were going through one and it was in an envelope stuffed in the photo album.’

‘She’s not a hoarder she’s just sentimental, she knew one day we’d want to look at this,’ Dippel added.

Dippel explained that her mother-in-law was a stay-at-home mom while her father-in-law worked in ranching.

‘I don’t know how much they were bringing in a year but my mother-in-law said they were super happy and stress free back then. Life was amazing,’ she said.

Dippel also revealed that she calculated what the total would be today for the same items at H-E-B using a massive spreadsheet – and it came out to approximately $500.

That’s close to $350 than it cost in the ’90s – an astonishing increase of about 220 percent.

‘We were immediately shocked,’ Dippel told the Today show of finding the receipt. ‘As we started reading off the prices, our jaws dropped.

‘It wasn’t until that moment that I truly realized how much the world has changed in nearly 30 years.’

She said the response online has been as equally ‘eye-opening and heartbreaking,’ explaining that she’s received hoards of messages and comments from people struggling to make ends meet.

‘It shouldn’t be this hard to live, and it shouldn’t take multiple jobs just to stay afloat,’ she stated.

‘An entire generation is struggling to imagine buying a home, building savings or planning for the future.

‘One comment in particular really stuck with me. A woman shared that her father made the same salary she makes today – and he supported a family of five with a stay-at-home mom.

‘Now, she and her husband both work, have two kids and still barely make it each month. How does that make sense? It’s impossible to ignore how broken the system feels.’
